In every journey, even the stopover counts. For us at SMP, taking care of the spaces in which we welcome our customers means providing a quality service and also contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. This is why we have chosen to join the HumanMaple Riciccami project, an innovative initiative that transforms an everyday gesture into an act of collective responsibility.
The problem of cigarette butts
Every year in the world, over 4.5 trillion cigarette filters are dispersed, 5185 tons in Italy alone. An impressive number that, translated into environmental impacts, means:
- 181 million euros of national costs related to marine pollution from tobacco products.
- 10 million euros of public expenditure for the management of tobacco waste.
In fact, cigarette butts are not biodegradable and release microplastics and harmful substances that contaminate soil and water. But a worthy solution can arise from this problem.
From waste to resource: the value of circular economy
With Riciccami, cigarette butts do not end up on the street or in drains, but are collected in special ashtrays, collected and recycled. It is a concrete example of circular economy: transforming waste into a resource and, in doing so, raising awareness among people for a more respectful behavior of shared space.
What are SMP’s actions?
We are starting to install Riciccami ashtrays in 38 SMP service stations and at our Marghera terminal, where a dedicated smoking area will soon be created- where even a cigarette break can become a more conscious gesture of environmental conservation.
A commitment consistent with our vision
Joining the Riciccami project is part of a broader vision that SMP continuously pursues:
- Care of spaces and the environment.
- Raising awareness among customers and collaborators.
- Support for initiatives that combine utility and social value.
Together, we can make a difference. Even with small daily gestures. Even with a cigarette put out in the right place.
