In recent years, the search for more sustainable fuels<\/strong> has become a priority for the entire energy sector.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The growing focus on CO\u2082 emissions and the environmental impacts of mobility has pushed companies to find innovative solutions to reduce their ecological footprint without compromising efficiency and performance.<\/p>\n\n

San Marco Petroli is at the forefront of this transition and in 2023 began the construction of a modular ethanol-gasoline blending plant (Bio Blend)<\/strong> at its coastal terminal in Marghera.\u00a0<\/span>An ambitious project which combines technological innovation and environmental sustainability, with the aim of optimizing the use of bioethanol<\/strong> in gasoline additive processes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why add ethanol to gasoline?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n

Ethanol is a biofuel derived from renewable raw materials such as corn, sugar cane and sugar beets. Adding ethanol to gasoline offers several benefits:<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  • Reduced emissions.<\/b> Ethanol burns cleaner than conventional gasoline, reducing emissions of CO\u2082 and other air pollutants<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Improved octane rating<\/b>. With an octane rating of around 108, ethanol improves the fuel\u2019s resistance to knock, resulting in more efficient performance.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Reduced dependence on oil<\/b>. Using a portion of biofuel reduces the need for fossil fuels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    A cutting-edge plant for an evolving market<\/b><\/h3>\n\n

    SMP is among the first terminals in Italy to develop a plant capable of managing different percentages of ethanol-gasoline blending, from a minimum of 3% up to 10%<\/strong>, in compliance with the specifications required by the various markets:<\/span><\/p>\n\n

    \u2013 <\/span>E5:<\/b> 5% ethanol \u2013 Standard in Italy (EN228 specifications).<\/span>\u2013 <\/span>E10<\/b>: 10% ethanol \u2013 Widespread in the USA and Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

    The plant will become operational during 2025<\/strong> and represents a significant step forward in SMP\u2019s strategy for a more sustainable energy future.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

    Towards greener mobility<\/b><\/h3>\n\n

    The fuel industry is constantly evolving, and the adoption of solutions such as ethanol-gasoline blending<\/strong> allows us to reconcile market needs with the need to reduce environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
